Spam Jam

Lovely Spam, Wonderful Spam! People in Hawaii love their Spam, and consume more of the stuff per capita than any other U.S. state. So of course we celebrate our love of everyone's favorite "mystery meat" with an annual celebration known as the Waikiki Spam Jam. Kalakaua Avenue becomes the center of all things Spam, from dozens of Spam dishes to Spam merchandise to wandering Spam mascots. Music is "Honolulu Shuffle" from The Ukulele Experiment by Kaimoku.

Spamtrap (Bill Shackelford, Installation Documentation)

"Spamtrap" is an interactive installation piece that helps me fine tune my spam email filter. My Spamtrap monitors an email address I created specifically to lure in spam. I do not use this email address for any other communication. I post this email address on websites and online bulletin boards that cause it to be harvested by spambots and then to start receiving spam. Because I know that all email sent to this email address is spam, I can adjust my spam filter to look for characteristics found in those confirmed spam messages when filtering out spam for my personal email account. The installation uses a wirelessly network connected Pentium II computer, personal printer, personal shredder and a Spamtrap email address. When a new spam email is detected by my installation, it automatically prints it out. The printed email slides down a track into the shredder that analyzes it.

Stomp Out Spammers

Whether we're clearing out our inbox, cleaning up a message board, ignoring junk in a newsgroup, or otherwise dealing with spam in its various forms, it's not uncommon to want to do something to the spammer. But the only thing that will really work is cutting off their "blood" supply by helping make spam unprofitable.
