Biofuel: Another Flawed Policy?

President Bush promised to expand American biofuel production but the result seems to be causing more harm than good. Some believe that corn is a poor source for energy - growing it and other staples as fuel has caused food prices worldwide to explode, even as the scarcity of flex-fuel vehicles means no significant increase in U.S. biofuel use. Now the U.N. is worried about rising food costs, while environmentalists see entire regions torn up to grow fuel crops. The great ethanol boom of 2007 goes bust, this week on Global Pulse. Alternate Focus "The Bases Are Loaded"

This is a great show called "Alternate Focus " which mostly trains their investigative lens on issues related to the Middle East. The excellent work of "The Bases Are Loaded" is a look at US military bases in Iraq. Will the U.S. ever leave Iraq Official policy promises an eventual departure while warning of the dire consequences of a "premature" withdrawal. But while Washington equivocates facts on the ground tell another story. Independent journalist Dahr Jamail and author Chalmers Johnson are discovering that military bases in Iraq are being consolidated from over a hundred to a handful of permanent US "megabases" with lavish amenities. While US officials try to obscure much of what is taking place through denials and quibbles over the definition of "permanent " this excellent video cuts through the crap. Gary Hart James Goldsborough Nadia Keilani Raed Jarrar Bruce Finley Kam Zarrabi and Mark Rudd all contribute with their unique perspectives.
